Irvine Welsh cover shoot

It was great to work with Art Director Matt Broughton to produce the front and back covers for Irvine Welsh's latest book A Decent Ride. Billed as Welsh's "funniest, filthiest book yet", the book centres around a hustling taxi driver and his questionable exploits around Edinburgh. Irvine had created wonderful character in the book and it was our job was to bring him to life on the front cover. This larger-than-life Scottish taxi-driver is not someone you'd want driving you around!
In the back of the cab we had the lovely and totally committed Amira Bochenska, upside down, with fag in hand, legs out the window for the afternoon. We decided to shoot indoors at Spring Studios in London so we could totally control the lighting and get a really dramatic night-time feel.
It was a really fun shoot and I'm really pleased that the final cover was exactly on point with what Irvine had envisaged. This is my second book cover for Irvine after shooting Sex Lives of Siamese Twins last year.

Ferrari Shoot

This week I was commissioned to shoot for Ferrari magazine, a Conde Nast publication all about the world's favourite super-car brand. Shot in a private mews in Kensington, we were joined on set by an f12 Berlinetta Ferrari and supermodel Jodie Kidd, a winning combination for a killer shoot. Also on set was Nick Mason, who as well as being Pink Floyd's drummer is also a total car fanatic. Alongside the photo-shoot Nick was interviewing Jodie about their mutual love for cars and racing, getting some great anecdotes about her time racing in Italy among other stories.

The major challenge on this shoot was the weather - we got a MASSIVE dose of Britain's finest rain! The downpour was relentless and showed no signs of easing up, so we set about waterproofing the lighting and computer kit and keeping everything and everyone dry. Jodie was great and the picture of elegance, despite the addition of a large umbrella.

One benefit of the rain was the beautiful pattern of droplets this created across the windscreen of the Ferrari. My Hasselblad camera and lenses reacted really well to the light reflecting off the raindrops and caused some great bokeh in the final shots.

Night Fishing with Mountain Men

I spent an evening recently doing a spot of night fishing on a frozen lake in Montana up in the Rockies with mountain man Andy , I like this shot of him baiting his rod , I think it shows the intensity in which he deals with all aspects of mountain life , you really need to have this drive to survive up in the areas where these guys live . This was shot with flash and a long exposure to burn in the night sky , which creates the halo of movement around Andy , I think it works for this shot . fb
