D&AD AWARDS

Really proud to win a Yellow Pencil at the D&AD awards for "The Living River"HSBC project .
working with Tom Odonnell from JWT and Will Anderson we headed down Chinas Yangtze River to shoot stills to accompany the amazing sound designer Nick Ryans recordings of the sounds of the Yangtze. Starting on  misty day in Shanghai I captured imagery to show the embodiment of the river and the people that work within it , also highlighting the work done by the World Wildlife Fund .
We then went down to Zhouzhuang an ancient water town , then to Chongming Island, Then to the famous first bend of the Yangtze and then on to Wuhan . It was fascinating seeing the changes in bone structure of the locals  as we headed down the river, and the landscapes open up . I think the locals were quite suprised to see us , It was really a case of looking for interesting subjects as went along and then approaching them to ask if we could shoot , sometimes I would be marching off across paddy fields in search of an interesting face with great determination , I must of looked quite a sight ...
so congratulations to all the team who worked on this great project

Living River

Award:Yellow Pencil

Yellow Pencil / Branding / Brand Experience & Environments / 2016

Celebrating the work of the HSBC Water Programme, “A Living River” is a sound installation that brings the Yangtze river to the Skybridge at Gatwick Airport.

Using authentic sounds taken directly from 35 locations, passengers passing through the Skybridge can journey from the First Bend of the Yangtze to the mouth in Shanghai in immersive, 3D sound.

The experience, as diverse as the river itself, features 160 speakers and over 60km of speaker cable. The installation reacts to the movement of people, the time of day and even climatic conditions using real-time weather data from China.
